Even in the face of turbulent past and continued political instability, Nepal has continued to achieve remarkable gains in access to education sinc elast two decades. National and global commitments, solidarity with the national and international non-state organizations, technical and financial support from the international community have played vital role in this progress.Dramatic change in political sphere in the country has been portrayed both as a force to yield high educational attainment and as the reason for deteriorating quality in schools. However, sustaining these gains by ensuring retention, completion and gainful learning in schools are the next challenge Nepal faces in meeting the EFA goals. Variation in educational attainment by gender, ethnicity, and consumption quintile, demand increased affirmative action.
