School closure due to COVID-19 pandemic has affected a large proportion of students worldwide for several weeks now. Meanwhile, leaders are struggling with uncertain trade-offs to ease lockdown including whether to restart school activities. As a response to this unprecedented crisis, UNESCO, UNICEF, WFP and the World Bank have jointly prepared a “Framework for reopening schools” in order for national and local authorities to facilitate decision making on how and when to reopen educational institutions. The guidelines elaborate measures to be taken prior to, during and after schools resume their daily schedule. It is asserted that the response should act as catalyst to improve learning outcomes and provide equitable access to education.
