This paper reviews the development of and future challenges to a new field of theory and practice addressing education before, in and after crisis. Such crises, often referred to broadly as “emergencies”, can include contexts of armed conflict, state fragility and natural disaster. The paper argues that this field as a whole has gone through two main phases of development, proliferationand consolidation, and is now entering a third phase, integration.
